Missed one of the wildest publisher swaps in years? Kojima's Metal Gear spiritual successor lost its PlayStation backing in June and landed with Xbox in September. This isn't breaking news — it's the full catch-up for everyone who blinked.
The sixty-second bombshell
On September 9, two announcements dropped one minute apart. PlayStation said it was “stepping away” from PHYSINT, Hideo Kojima's next-generation action-espionage game. Sixty seconds later, Xbox's Asha Sharma posted that Microsoft would publish it instead. Just like that, one of the most anticipated games in development switched teams — and both of Kojima's active projects ended up under the Xbox umbrella.
How we got here
January 2024: PHYSINT is revealed at a PlayStation State of Play as a PlayStation Studios title — Kojima's return to the espionage genre he defined with Metal Gear, built around heavy performance capture and cinematic storytelling.
Mid-June 2026: Kojima Productions gets unexpected notice that PlayStation Studios intends to cancel the project. Kojima later told the Washington Post he learned about it over a Zoom call: “I was just shocked and surprised. I didn't have any anger or sadness. I was just thinking, ‘What should I do?’”
June–September 2026: Three quiet months of searching for a new publishing partner.
September 9, 2026: The swap goes public — Sony confirms its exit, Xbox confirms the pickup within the same minute.
September 17, 2026: The cast is revealed at Tokyo Game Show, led by Bill Skarsgård.
Why Sony walked away
Bloomberg's Jason Schreier reported the business side: a ballooning budget, missed development deadlines, and questions about long-term profitability. But the real breaking point was exclusivity. Sony reportedly didn't want to bankroll a massive single-player production that would eventually ship on rival platforms. Kojima wanted the game to reach players everywhere. Neither side would bend, so Sony walked.
PlayStation's official statement called it a “difficult decision to step away” while praising Kojima's vision. Kojima's own account was blunter — the studio “unexpectedly received notice” of the cancellation. Kojima Productions later pushed back on speculation about the split, insisting the studio is healthy and profitable, that development continues, and that the PlayStation relationship “remains strong.”
Why Xbox was the natural landing spot
This wasn't a cold call. Kojima Productions already works with Xbox on OD, the experimental horror project — Kojima himself described PHYSINT as expanding that relationship “beyond OD.” And Xbox's entire philosophy right now is platform-agnostic: they publish on PC and even on PlayStation. A studio that wants its game everywhere and a publisher that puts games everywhere? That's a natural fit in a way the Sony deal never was.
The deal reportedly goes beyond just publishing — it includes film and television rights tied to both PHYSINT and OD. Xbox has signaled the game will ship on its consoles and PC rather than as a locked exclusive.
Where it stands now
Development continues under Xbox. Bill Skarsgård leads a cast revealed at Tokyo Game Show. There's no release date and no confirmed platform list yet. And to be clear: this was about PHYSINT specifically, not a total breakup — Death Stranding 2 shipped fine under Sony, and both companies insist the broader relationship survives.
KongMNG's take
Look, Sony bankrolling Kojima and then getting cold feet over the budget is the most PlayStation thing ever. But credit where it's due — Xbox stepping in three months later instead of letting PHYSINT die in a drawer is a genuinely good move for everyone. Kojima gets his Metal Gear successor, Xbox gets a prestige title, and we actually get the game. Everybody wins except whoever at Sony has to explain this one in meetings.
